I so hope that WITF will again air the America Outdoors series with Baratunde Thurston. (This would be season 3.) I work at Wellspan Philhaven Behavioral Health, leading groups in an Extended Acute Unit. Our patients struggle with chronic mental health issues. I am committed to bringing into my patients lives things that connect them to something bigger than themselves. I use every chance I get to excite them about, and expose them to the natural world. (I believe that we cannot simply talk people out of wanting to end their lives. We must give them reasons to want to live!) We have a diverse group of patients, from many backgrounds, nationalities, and skin color. I have noticed that people of color seem to often be less exposed to and connected with the outdoor world. I take them on mindfulness walks in our woods on the hospital grounds; teach them birding skills; and raise monarch butterflies by planting milkweed in the courtyard with them. Together we find the caterpillar eggs on the leaves. I am so excited that there is a show on WITF that exactly addresses the need for people of color to open themselves to the natural world; and that teaches them that any risks they may experience are well worth the gifts received in the process. Some of the later episodes of season 2 directly addressed mental health struggles of people whose stories Baratunde has shared with his viewers! Please, please show America Outdoors, Season 3! We are looking forward to more stories of people of color thriving with the natural world as a healing resource in their lives!
