Taylor Swift Backs Kamala Harris for President After Debate

Kamala Harris just got a major thumbs-up.

Right after Tuesday’s debate ended, Taylor Swift jumped on Instagram to show her support for Donald Trump’s rival.

Here’s what she told her 283 million followers:

I watched the debate tonight, like many of you. If you haven’t already, now is the perfect time to look into the issues and see where each candidate stands. I always make sure to read up and watch everything about their plans and policies.

Recently, I found out that AI created a fake endorsement from me for Donald Trump on his site. This really scared me about how AI can spread lies. It made me realize I need to be clear about my voting plans. The best way to fight lies is with the truth.

I will be voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m choosing @kamalaharris because she supports the causes that matter to me. She’s a strong, talented leader, and I believe we can do more good if we are led by calm leaders instead of chaotic ones. Her choice of running mate @timwalz impressed me too; he has been defending LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and women’s rights for years.

I’ve done my research and made my decision. Now it’s your turn to do yours and make your choice. First-time voters, remember you need to be registered to vote! It’s also easier if you vote early. I’ll share links in my story for registration and early voting info.

With love and hope,

Watch MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow break the news of Swift’s endorsement to Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, live on-air:

A few minutes later, Jon Stewart talked about Swift’s endorsement on The Daily Show. “I have some breaking news,” he said after a commercial break. “We discussed earlier if these debates even matter or do anything? Apparently, they did impact one undecided voter: Ms. Taylor Swift has endorsed Kamala Harris.” His audience cheered loudly before he joked: “Taylor Swift and I were watching TV at the same time!”

On CBS, Stephen Colbert said Harris gave “one of the best debate performances I have ever seen,” adding there was nothing that could have made it better.

Then came Swift’s endorsement.

“I stand corrected,” he admitted.

The debate lasted over 90 minutes with two commercial breaks but no opening statements. Each candidate had two minutes per question with extra time for rebuttals and follow-ups while mics were muted when not speaking.

The moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis tried to keep things civil at the National Constitution Center in Philly. Candidates didn’t know questions beforehand nor could they use props or notes on stage.

A coin toss let Trump choose who would give the final closing statement. You can share your thoughts on their performances here .
