Save the date, DC Comics enthusiasts: James Gunn and Peter Safran’s fresh DC Universe is debuting this December.
Max revealed on Thursday that Creature Commandos, their new adult animated series, will premiere on December 5. The show’s first season has seven episodes, with new ones coming out every week until January 16.
Gunn wrote and produced Creature Commandos, which follows a secret team of imprisoned monsters sent on missions too risky for humans. When everything else fails, they’re the last, worst option. (Check out the teaser for Creature Commandos above.)
The voice cast includes Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sean Gunn as GI Robot and Weasel, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Indira Varma as The Bride, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.
At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con in July, Gunn and Safran—now co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios—unveiled their updated “bullet” logo from the design used between 1977 to 2005.
“When Peter and I formed DC Studios, we immediately knew what logo we wanted to use,” Gunn shared on social media.

Though Creature Commandos kicks off the new DCU, Gunn’s Superman film with David Corenswet will be its first movie release on July 11, 2025. After Superman’s debut in theaters comes Peacemaker Season 2. Meanwhile, Viola Davis’ live-action Waller spinoff series is still being developed actively.
Other executive producers for Creature Commandos include Safran, Dean Lorey (known for Harley Quinn), and Sam Register.
