The Orville Season 4 Renewal Update: Adrianne Palicki Hints Cancellation

It seems like the days of the Orville exploring the cosmos might be over. The Seth MacFarlane-led space saga has been missing in action since August 2022. Many signs suggest that the Orville is docked for good, especially considering the time it took to launch Season 3. Yet, Hulu hasn’t confirmed that the expensive, VFX-heavy series won’t return.

Recently, Adrianne Palicki appeared on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast. When asked about her leading role on the series, she said, “No, no longer doing that.” Rosenbaum then asked if the Orville was indeed “cancelled.” Palicki responded, “I don’t know, truly, the answer to that.

She continued, “I think there’s talk that it could possibly be something that certain people want to do…,” she chose her words carefully, “but it’s a really difficult show to shoot, man.” Palicki explained how the Orville shot 33 episodes over six years. This doesn’t provide a steady income stream for an actor, averaging just 5-1/2 episodes a year.

“It became an actual, real issue,” she said. There was so much time between seasons because Seth wanted to write everything himself. At one point, the cast had to fight the studio for a holding fee. Cast member J. Lee reportedly survived on “saltines and Gatorade” at one point. “It was horrible,” she says.

Season 3, also known as The Orville: New Horizons, streamed from June 2 through Aug. 4, 2022. When TVLine spoke with series creator/star MacFarlane after the finale, he mentioned one challenge facing any potential Season 4. “How do I work it into everything else that’s now going on?” he asked, referring to his other projects, including a Ted prequel series for Peacock. “I will say that I get as emotionally invested in the show as any of the fans, so I will find a way to do it if there is a Season 4.”

Meanwhile, Craig Erwich, President of ABC Entertainment, Hulu & Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals, spoke to TVLine in January. “It’s a great show and I know that the fans loved having it back in their lives. And Seth did a great job, uniquely as he can, in front of and behind the camera. But we don’t have anything to share right now” about the show’s fate. As of the last check by TVLine, there had been no updates.
