Feeling gloomy about American politics? The Emmys provided a refreshing break with a touch of nostalgia from a beloved political drama.
On Sunday, The West Wing cast gathered at the Peacock Theater in LA to celebrate 25 years since the show’s debut. Martin Sheen, Allison Janney, Dulé Hill, Richard Schiff, and Janel Moloney were all there.
While presenting the Outstanding Drama Series Emmy, which went to Shogun, the cast reminisced about creating political drama back in the day. Janel Moloney reminded everyone to register and vote, saying, “Our political landscape has shifted.”
But where was Bradley Whitford? He shared his regrets on It breaks my heart not to be able to be with my West Wing family at the Emmys tonight or at the White House later this week to celebrate our 25th birthday, but I’m in Budapest on another White House set pretending to work for another administration. The West Wing aired from 1999 to 2006 on NBC, winning 26 Emmys including four consecutive Outstanding Drama Series awards. The show featured many stars like Rob Lowe, Stockard Channing, Joshua Malina, Mary McCormack, Alan Alda, Kristen Chenoweth and John Spencer.
John Spencer passed away in 2005 due to a heart attack during the final season. His character Leo McGarry’s death was written into the show as happening on Election Night.
Fans really love these reunions; they bring back so many memories.
The cast had a reunion in 2020 for HBO Max’s special reading of “Hartsfield Landing” from Season 3. Sterling K. Brown stepped in for Spencer’s role as Leo.
Seeing these actors together again reminds us of how much we miss those old episodes of The West Wing.
