Netflix has renewed Wednesday for a third season, the streaming giant announced Tuesday. The early renewal comes months before the show’s highly anticipated second season is set to premiere.
The gothic comedy series, starring Jenna Ortega as the iconic Addams Family character Wednesday Addams, became an unexpected global phenomenon following its November 2022 debut.
Wednesday broke viewing records for Netflix, amassing over 250 million viewing hours in its first week alone. The series went on to become the platform’s second most-watched English-language series of all time.
Production on the show’s second season is currently underway, with Ortega reprising her role alongside returning cast members Catherine Zeta-Jones (Morticia Addams), Luis Guzmán (Gomez Addams), and Emma Myers (Enid Sinclair).
“The overwhelming response to Wednesday has exceeded our wildest expectations,” said Peter Friedlander, Netflix‘s Head of Scripted Series for the US and Canada. “We’re thrilled to continue Wednesday’s journey for a third season.”
Series creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar will return as showrunners and executive producers for the third season. Tim Burton, who directed four episodes of the first season, is also expected to remain involved with the production.
Netflix has not announced a premiere date for Wednesday Season 2, though industry insiders suggest a late 2024 release is likely.
The early renewal signals the streamer’s confidence in the series as it continues to build its slate of original programming amid increasing competition in the streaming landscape.
