Netflix has renewed Virgin River for an eighth season ahead of the show’s seventh season premiere, the streaming service confirmed Tuesday.
The early renewal comes as the romantic drama continues its successful run on the platform. Virgin River follows nurse practitioner Melinda “Mel” Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) who moves to the remote California town seeking a fresh start, only to find that small-town living isn’t as simple as she expected.
Season 7 of the series is currently in production, with premiere dates yet to be announced.
The renewal demonstrates Netflix‘s continued confidence in the series, which has maintained a loyal viewership since its 2019 debut. Based on Robyn Carr’s bestselling book series, Virgin River has become one of the platform’s reliable performers in the romance drama category.
Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson lead the ensemble cast, which includes Tim Matheson, Annette O’Toole, Colin Lawrence, and Benjamin Hollingsworth.
The series is produced by Reel World Management, with Sue Tenney serving as the original showrunner. Patrick Sean Smith took over showrunner duties in season 5.
Virgin River‘s sixth season is expected to premiere on the the streaming service later this year, though Netflix has not yet announced an official release date.
