The Walking Dead Dead City Renewed for Season 3 With a Twist

AMC announced Thursday that The Walking Dead: Dead City has been renewed for a third season ahead of its Season 2 premiere, which is expected to air in 2025.

The renewal comes with a significant behind-the-scenes change. Eli Jorné, who developed the spinoff and served as showrunner for Season 1, will step down from his role. Scott M. Gimple, chief content officer of The Walking Dead universe, will take over showrunning duties for the upcoming third season.

“We’re thrilled to continue the compelling story of Maggie and Negan in the ruins of Manhattan,” said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment at AMC Studios. “The creative team has crafted an incredible vision for Season 3 that will further expand this corner of The Walking Dead universe.”

Dead City stars Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the unlikely duo of Maggie and Negan, former enemies forced to work together in a post-apocalyptic Manhattan. The series premiered in June 2023 as part of AMC’s expansion of The Walking Dead franchise.

Production on Season 2 is currently underway with an anticipated premiere in early 2025. The network has not announced if Season 3 will be the final installment of the series.

This renewal continues AMC’s commitment to The Walking Dead universe, which includes The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon starring Norman Reedus and the upcoming The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live featuring Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira.

Morgan, who has portrayed Negan since Season 6 of the original series, recently shared his excitement about the show’s direction on social media. “The scripts for Season 2 are incredible,” he wrote. “Fans are in for a wild ride.”
