– Disney+ cancels plans for “The Spiderwick Chronicles” TV series
– William Joyce to focus on adapting his books into films for the platform
– Nickelodeon also cancels plans for a potential Spiderwick TV series
Despite being announced in 2020, plans for a TV adaptation of “The Spiderwick Chronicles” on Disney+ have been cancelled. The news comes after both Disney+ and Nickelodeon eventually backed away from the project.
According to the original author, Tony DiTerlizzi, the decision was made due to the choice to focus on film adaptations for the platform instead, with William Joyce at the helm. DiTerlizzi confirmed the news in a recent interview with Den of Geek, stating, “Disney+ has decided to stop production on their Spiderwick series, so they won’t be making the series. Bill Joyce and I are currently in the process of reconfiguring Spiderwick to get it into the right hands.”
“The Spiderwick Chronicles” is a popular children’s fantasy book series, written by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black, chronicling the adventures of the Grace children who discover a world of magical creatures after moving into their great-great-uncle’s estate. The books have been previously adapted into a film in 2008, starring Freddie Highmore, Sarah Bolger, and Mary-Louise Parker.
With the TV series no longer in the works, fans of the franchise will have to wait for updates on the eventual film projects to enjoy more adaptations of this magical world.
