Hulu has renewed The Lowdown for a second season, the streaming platform announced Tuesday.
The critically acclaimed drama series will return with new episodes in early 2024, though an exact premiere date has not yet been confirmed.
“We’re thrilled with the overwhelming response to The Lowdown and can’t wait to continue this journey with our incredible cast and creative team,” said Sarah Johnson, Head of Original Programming at Hulu.
The Lowdown stars Michael Chen (previously seen in The Morning Show) as investigative journalist Alex Rivera, who uncovers corruption in a fictional Midwest town. The ensemble cast includes Emmy winner Taraji P. Henson as District Attorney Eleanor Washington and breakout newcomer Riley Diaz.
The series debuted in April to strong critical acclaim and steady viewership growth over its 10-episode first season. The finale, which aired last month, left several plotlines unresolved — particularly regarding Rivera’s investigation into local political figures.
[Spoiler Alert] Season one concluded with Chen’s character discovering evidence linking the town’s mayor to a series of suspicious development deals, while Henson’s DA character faced a difficult ethical dilemma that compromised her career.
Series creator David Nguyen will return as showrunner and executive producer for the second season. Executive producers also include James Wong and Marta Kauffman.
“The characters and world we’ve built have so many more stories to tell,” Nguyen said in a statement. “Season two will push our characters into even more complex moral territory as they fight for truth in a community resistant to change.”
Production on the new season is scheduled to begin in Vancouver this fall.
