The Last of Us Renewed for Season 3 at HBO

HBO has officially renewed The Last of Us for a third season, the network announced Thursday. The renewal comes ahead of the show’s second season, which is currently in production.

The post-apocalyptic drama, based on the acclaimed video game series from Naughty Dog, has become one of the network’s most successful new properties since its January 2023 debut.

“The journey continues,” said Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President of HBO Programming. “Craig and Neil have once again proven their brilliant storytelling vision, and we’re thrilled to continue this epic saga for our viewers.”

The series stars Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, Game of Thrones) as Joel and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) as Ellie, survivors navigating a world devastated by a fungal pandemic. Season 2 is set to adapt portions of the video game sequel, The Last of Us Part II.

New cast members joining the sophomore season include Kaitlyn Dever (Dopesick) as Abby, Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Dina, and Young Mazino (Beef) as Jesse.

The series is created by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and Neil Druckmann, who also created the original games. Both serve as executive producers alongside Carolyn Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Rose Lam.

Season 2 of The Last of Us is expected to premiere in 2025, though HBO has not yet announced a specific date. The first season received 24 Emmy nominations, winning eight awards including Outstanding Guest Actor for Nick Offerman’s performance in the standout episode “Long, Long Time.”

Production details and a timeline for the newly announced third season have not yet been revealed.
