Showtime has renewed The Chi for an eighth season, the network announced Friday. The pickup comes ahead of the drama’s seventh season, which is currently in production.
Created and executive produced by Lena Waithe, The Chi continues to be one of the network’s most consistent performers. The series follows the interconnected lives of residents in Chicago’s South Side neighborhood.
The renewal solidifies The Chi as one of Showtime’s longest-running current original series.
“The world that Lena Waithe has created continues to resonate deeply with audiences,” said Nina L. Diaz, President of Content and Chief Creative Officer at Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios. “We’re thrilled to bring fans another season of this powerful story.”
The ensemble cast includes Jacob Latimore, Alex Hibbert, Yolonda Ross, Shamon Brown Jr., Michael V. Epps, Birgundi Baker, Luke James and and Curtiss Cook.
Season 6, which concluded in 2023, saw the series tackle gentrification, police reform, and community activism while maintaining its character-driven storytelling approach.
The Chi is executive produced by Waithe, Common, Aaron Kaplan, Rick Famuyiwa, Derek Dudley, Shelby Stone, and Jet Wilkinson. The series is produced by 20th Television.
Season 7 is expected to premiere later this year.
