HBO has renewed two freshman comedy series, The Chair Company and I Love LA, for second seasons following their successful debuts earlier this year.
The premium cable network announced the dual renewals Thursday during its quarterly programming presentation to executives and press.
The Chair Company, a workplace comedy starring Jean Smart (Emmy winner for Hacks) and Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother), has averaged 4.2 million viewers across all platforms since its March premiere.
“We’re thrilled with the response to this quirky, heartfelt comedy,” said Casey Bloys, Chief Content Officer at HBO. “Jean and Jason’s chemistry has resonated with audiences in ways we couldn’t have anticipated.”
Created by former Veep writer Lucia Aniello, the series follows a struggling furniture company’s unexpected revival under an unlikely partnership between a tech industry burnout and an old-school craftswoman.
I Love LA has similarly impressed executives with its consistent viewership growth throughout its 10-episode run. The series, starring Issa Rae (Insecure) and Donald Glover (Atlanta), explores the interconnected lives of entertainment industry professionals in Los Angeles.
The show has garnered particular praise for its authentic portrayal of the the city’s diverse neighborhoods and razor-sharp industry satire.
Both series are expected to begin production on their second seasons later this fall, with premiere dates tentatively scheduled for mid-2023.
HBO also confirmed that veteran drama Succession will conclude with its upcoming fourth season, set to premiere in early 2023.
