Steve Harwell, the lead singer of the popular rock band Smash Mouth, has passed away at the age of 54. Harwell’s cause of death on Wednesday, February 2, 2023, was cardiomyopathy, also referred to as heart failure. His death was made public by the band through an official statement.

Smash Mouth rose to fame in the late 1990s and continue to be known for hits like “All Star,” “Walkin’ on the Sun,” and “I’m a Believer,” which was featured in the 2001 animated film “Shrek.” Harwell had been grappling with health issues and stepped back from the band for a hiatus in October 2021. At the time, a video of his slurred speech and aggressive behavior during a concert went viral, prompting concerns for his well-being. Harwell later apologized to fans, explaining that it was a result of feeling “not well.”

During his break from the band, Harwell was focused on his well-being and received a diagnosis of cardiomyopathy and other severe health issues. Cardiomyopathy occurs when the heart muscles are weakened and become unable to pump blood effectively. According to the band’s statement, in the months leading up to his death, Harwell was “doing everything he could to get his health back.”

The band’s social media post about Harwell’s passing read, “It is with heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of the loss of our friend, partner, and lead singer Steve Harwell. Thank you all for your kind words and thoughts. Let’s remember Steve for his love of life, his humor, and his incredible gift as a musician.”

Fans and fellow artists have expressed their shock and condolences following the news of his death. Harwell’s impact as a musician and the lasting popularity of Smash Mouth’s songs will continue to be felt even after his passing.
