FX has officially renewed Shōgun for a second season, with stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis set to reprise their roles.
The critically acclaimed historical drama, initially billed as a limited series, will continue its story beyond the adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 novel that formed the basis of season one.
Sanada, who portrays Lord Yoshii Toranaga, will also expand his role behind the camera as an executive producer for the upcoming season.
“From the beginning of this journey, I believed this was a once-in-a-lifetime project,” Sanada said in a statement. “The worldwide success of Shōgun has been a dream come true.”
The renewal comes as no surprise following the show’s record-breaking performance for FX. The series became the network’s most-watched premiere ever and maintained strong viewership throughout its 10-episode run on Hulu.
Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, who adapted the original novel, will return as creators and executive producers for season two. The husband-and-wife team worked closely with the production to ensure historical and cultural authenticity throughout the first season.
Details about the plot for season two remain under wraps, but the new episodes will continue exploring feudal Japan during the early 17th century. The first season concluded with Toranaga’s decisive victory over the Council of Regents.
Anna Sawai, who portrayed Lady Mariko in season one, is not expected to return given her character’s fate in the finale.
FX has not announced a production timeline or target premiere date for the second season.
