Apple TV+ has renewed Severance for a third season ahead of its second season premiere, the streaming platform announced Thursday.
The psychological thriller, created by Dan Erickson and executive produced by Ben Stiller, will continue its story beyond the upcoming sophomore season, which is currently in production.
“The response to Severance has exceeded our wildest expectations,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+. “Dan Erickson’s vision, combined with the extraordinary performances from our cast, has resonated deeply with audiences worldwide.”
Severance stars Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation) as Mark Scout, an employee at mysterious corporation Lumon Industries, where workers undergo a surgical procedure that separates their work memories from their personal lives. The ensemble cast includes Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Jen Tullock, Dichen Lachman, Michael Chernus, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette.
The series earned 14 Emmy nominations for its debut season, winning two for Outstanding Music Composition and Outstanding Main Title Design.
Season 2 faced production delays due to the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes but is expected to premiere in late 2024, though Apple TV+ has not yet announced an official release date.
“We’re thrilled to continue this journey with our incredible cast and crew,” Stiller said in a statement. “The world of Severance has so many more stories to tell, and we’re grateful to Apple for their continued support.”
[Spoiler Alert] The first season ended with a dramatic cliffhanger as the “severed” employees briefly awakened in their outside lives, discovering shocking truths about their existence before being forcibly returned to their work personas.
The early Season 3 renewal signals the streaming service’s confidence in the series as one of its flagship original productions.
