Netflix announced Thursday it has reached a multi-year agreement with Sesame Workshop to become the new streaming home for Sesame Street, rescuing the beloved children’s series from potential cancellation.
The landmark deal comes after months of uncertainty following HBO Max’s decision not to renew its previous distribution arrangement.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Big Bird, Elmo, Cookie Monster and all the residents of Sesame Street to the Netflix family,” said Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of Independent and Documentary Films. “This iconic series has shaped generations of children around the world, and we’re honored to help continue its educational mission.”
Under the new agreement, Netflix will receive exclusive streaming rights to new episodes of Sesame Street beginning in 2024, with episodes appearing on PBS nine months after their initial streaming debut.
The deal also includes access to the show’s extensive back catalog spanning more than five decades.
Sesame Workshop CEO Steve Youngwood expressed relief at finding a new distribution partner during challenging times for children’s programming.
“This partnership ensures Sesame Street can continue serving children and families with the educational content they’ve trusted for over 50 years,” Youngwood said. “Netflix’s global reach will help us connect with even more families worldwide.”
The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, though industry sources suggest the deal represents a significant investment by Netflix in expanding its children’s programming offerings.
Sesame Street, which first premiered in 1969, has won more Emmy Awards than any other children’s show in television history. The series has been praised for its groundbreaking approach to educational content and representation of diverse communities.
The show recently completed its 53rd season and will begin production on Season 54 later this year. Netflix has committed to maintaining the series’ educational focus while exploring new creative opportunities.
In addition to the main series, the agreement includes several Sesame Street specials and spin-offs that will be developed exclusively for the streaming platform.
