My Lady Jane has been permanently dethroned.
Prime Video has decided to cancel the comedic fantasy drama about Lady Jane Grey’s short reign as Queen of England. The series, which premiered on June 27, was well-liked but didn’t make it to Nielsen’s Top 10 weekly streaming charts.
Despite being named one of the most underrated shows of 2024, My Lady Jane won’t see a second season. Emily Bader played the young noblewoman who was Queen for just nine days in 1553 before being beheaded. The show offered a twist on history, presenting a world where “the damsel in distress saves herself” in an adventure filled with love, action, fantasy, comedy, and romance.
The show had a unique twist where some characters, called Ethians, could transform into animals. Jane finds herself in an arranged marriage with Lord Guildford Dudley, a man she once flirted with in a bar. To her surprise, he turns into a horse during the day! In the finale, Jane and Guildford are reunited, hinting at more political drama as Princess Mary takes the throne from Jane and nearly has her executed.
The cast featured Jordan Peters as King Edward VI, Anna Chancellor as Lady Frances Grey (Jane’s mom), Dominic Cooper as Lord Seymour (Mary’s ally), Rob Brydon as Lord Dudley (Guildford’s dad), Abbie Hern as Princess Bess, Isabella Brownson and Robyn Betteridge as Jane’s sisters Katherine and Margaret. Also starring were Henry Ashton as Lord Stan Dudley (Guildford’s brother), Máiréad Tyers as Susannah (Jane’s Ethian friend), Michael Workeye as Archer (Ethian pack leader), Joe Klocek as Fitz (Ethian thief), Brandon Grace as William Seymour, and Will Keen as the Duke of Norfolk. Jim Broadbent made a guest appearance as the Duke of Leicester.
Meredith Glynn and Gemma Burgess were the showrunners for this unique series.
Fans always get sad when good shows end too soon.
Deadline first shared the news about its cancellation.
