The visual effects workers at Marvel Studios have cast their vote to unionize and will now be represented by the Animation Guild (IATSE Local 839). The guild announced that the National Labor Relations Board had counted the votes and the unionization efforts were successful. This new union will represent around 60 Visual Effects (VFX) artists who work for Marvel in California.

Marvel, owned by The Walt Disney Company, is a prominent provider of hit TV series and blockbuster movies like “Avengers: Endgame”. The Visual Effects (VFX) workers play a critical role in bringing these stories to life on screen.

The Animation Guild (TAG) shared the news on their social media account, stating “The NationalLaborRelationsBoard has counted the vote and IATSE Local 83is now the exclusive bargaining representative for Marvel VFX artists in California!”. TAG is looking forward to working with Marvel to negotiate their first contract for their new members.

TAG Business Representative Jason MacLeod stated, “These VFX workers are dedicated and skilled professionals who deserve a voice in their workplace. We are honored to help them organize and bargain for their fair share.”

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) has seen growth in various departments within the entertainment industry in recent years, with a number of unionization efforts successfully moving forward.

This new representation continues the growing trend within the entertainment industry for workers to seek better working conditions, fair treatment, and appropriate compensation for their skills and contributions.
