Mark Thompson, the former CEO of The New York Times Company and BBC Director General, has been appointed the new Chairman and CEO of cable news network CNN, effective February 1, 2023. Warner Bros. Discovery made the announcement about Thompson’s appointment on Wednesday.

The announcement comes with high praise for Thompson’s accomplishments at his previous ventures. David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, stated in a press release, “I have admired Mark Thompson’s work for years from afar. When we were finally able to work together over the past year on a project for Disney, I knew that someone with his knowledge, experience and integrity would be a perfect fit to take CNN to new heights.”

Thompson faces an important task, as CNN plans to merge its linear and streaming businesses into one unit. This move is ahead of the launch of CNN and CNN+ streaming platforms in the first quarter of 2023. Thompson will be responsible for overseeing and executing this transition, which aims to benefit consumers and advertisers alike by offering a more cohesive and seamless experience.

Thompson expressed his excitement about his new role and the future of CNN, saying, “I am thrilled to be joining CNN at this crucial time in its history and the history of news. With the support and resources of our parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a global leader in news and information.”

Under his leadership, CNN aims to focus on its commitment to journalism and storytelling while exploring new business opportunities and potential partnerships.
