HBO announced Wednesday that The Comeback will return for a third and final season, with Lisa Kudrow reprising her role as Valerie Cherish.
The critically acclaimed comedy series, which first premiered in 2005, follows former sitcom star Valerie Cherish (Kudrow) as she navigates the entertainment industry while being filmed for a reality show.
After a nine-year hiatus, The Comeback returned for a second season in 2014. Now, nearly a decade later, the series will conclude with what the network describes as “a proper sendoff” for Valerie Cherish.
“Valerie Cherish has always been a character who resonates deeply with audiences,” said Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content. “We’re thrilled to bring her journey to a satisfying conclusion.”
Kudrow, who co-created the series with Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City, And Just Like That…), will also serve as executive producer for the final season.
King expressed excitement about the opportunity to complete Valerie’s story. “Lisa and I have been discussing where Valerie would be in 2024,” he said. “The entertainment landscape has changed dramatically, giving us rich new territory to explore.”
Production is scheduled to begin in early 2024, with the final season expected to premiere later that year.
The series earned Kudrow an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for both previous seasons. The show has been praised for its satirical take on Hollywood, reality television, and celebrity culture.
Additional casting announcements will be made in the coming months, though fans are hoping to see the return of series regulars including Malin Akerman (Watchmen) and Kellan Lutz (Twilight).
