– The ‘Frasier’ reboot will honor actor John Mahoney
– Martin Crane’s character will not be recast
– A tribute to Mahoney could include naming a bar after his character
The upcoming ‘Frasier’ reboot will pay tribute to the late actor John Mahoney, who previously played the character of Martin Crane, father of the lead character Frasier (Kelsey Grammer). A special reference to Mahoney may be incorporated into the show, such as naming a bar after Martin.
Mahoney passed away in 2018 at the age of 77, just a few years before the return of ‘Frasier’ was announced. Natascha McElhone, who has been cast as the new female lead Charlotte in the reboot, shared that Martin’s character would not be recast, in order to respect Mahoney and his incredible performance in the original series. The upcoming reboot does not yet have a set premiere date.
“One of the things we’ve talked about… is honoring John, you know, and figuring out how we, in his absence, how we do that,” actress Peri Gilpin, who played Roz Doyle in the original ‘Frasier’, revealed. She also mentioned that while the idea of a tribute, such as naming a bar after Martin, has not been finalized, it is something that has been discussed, and they hope it would make people smile and remember Mahoney.
In addition to honoring the late Mahoney, the reboot will bring back many of the original key cast members, including Kelsey Grammer, returning as the iconic Dr. Frasier Crane, and David Hyde Pierce reprising his role as Frasier’s neurotic brother, Niles Crane.
