Max has officially renewed Hacks for a fifth season, the streamer announced Tuesday. The pickup comes just days after the comedy’s fourth season finale aired on the platform.
The critically acclaimed series, starring Jean Smart as legendary Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance and Hannah Einbinder as her young writer Ava Daniels, will continue its run after delivering one of the streamer’s most successful comedy offerings to date.
“The creative vision of Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky continues to elevate Hacks to new heights,” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content at Max. “We’re thrilled to bring viewers another season of this exceptional series that resonates with both critics and audiences alike.”
Hacks has been a consistent awards contender since its debut, with Smart winning back-to-back Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of Deborah Vance.
The fourth season explored Deborah’s continued career resurgence while navigating her complicated relationship with Ava. [Spoiler Alert] The finale saw the pair reaching a new understanding after professional tensions threatened their partnership.
The series also stars Carl Clemons-Hopkins (Chicago Med), Kaitlin Olson (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), and Megan Stalter (Cath), with Paul W. Downs pulling double duty as both co-creator and cast member.
Production on the fifth season is expected to begin in early 2023, though Max has not yet announced a premiere date.
The renewal continues Max‘s investment in prestige comedy programming, with Hacks joining the recently renewed The Sex Lives of College Girls and Somebody Somewhere on the platform’s slate.
