Showtime has renewed Dexter: Original Sin for a second season, the network announced Tuesday. The prequel series, which explores the early years of the iconic serial killer, has been a strong performer since its premiere.
The renewal comes as the first season continues its run, with new episodes dropping weekly on the streaming platform.
Dexter: Original Sin stars Patrick Gibson as young Dexter Morgan, with Christian Slater portraying his adoptive father Harry Morgan. The series is set in 1991 Miami, following Dexter as a recent college graduate beginning his career as a forensic blood spatter analyst with the Miami Metro Police Department.
The prequel explores Dexter’s formative years, revealing how Harry’s “Code” was developed and implemented to channel his son’s homicidal urges toward those who deserve punishment.
Showrunner Clyde Phillips, who worked on the original Dexter series, returned to helm the prequel.
“The audience response to Original Sin has been tremendous,” said Gary Levine, President of Entertainment at Showtime. “We’re excited to continue exploring Dexter’s origin story with our exceptional cast and creative team.”
The series serves as an extension of the Dexter universe following the original show’s eight-season run (2006-2013) and the 2021 revival Dexter: New Blood.
Season one of Original Sin is currently streaming, with the the season finale scheduled for late December.
