Filming the intricate dance scene in Lady in the Lake Episode 6 was a real challenge for the soon-to-be Superman.
David Corenswet, who plays Allan Durst in the Apple TV+ show and is set to be Superman alongside Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane in James Gunn’s upcoming movie, got hurt during a filming break, says director Alma Har’el.
The big dance number happens while Maddie (Natalie Portman) is unconscious in the hospital, recovering from a previous attack. In her dream, there’s a grand dance at Hecht’s Department Store with Maddie at the center. Characters like Ferdie (Y’lan Noel) and Reggie (Josiah Cross) join in, dancing to Peggy Lee’s “Me and My Shadow.”
Allan, dressed as a sailor, had to do a tough tap-dancing routine down some stairs. Alma Har’el explains they practiced it a lot because they were worried he might fall. They even kept drying the stairs to make sure he wouldn’t slip. But during a break, he went for coffee and ended up falling down another set of stairs, hurting his shoulder.
We fans can sometimes forget how risky these scenes can be.
Corenswet needed medical help (“He was a hero about it,” says Har’el), so they decided to have a choreographer of similar size fill in for him. “They kind of look the same, so we’re going to use him,” she recalls. They planned to swap costumes from David to the stand-in. But just then, paramedics cut David’s shirt open on set. Har’el laughs about it now: “That was a day to remember.”
The final episode shows half of David dancing from previously recorded angles and half with the stand-in dancer after David got hurt.
Har’el assures us that Corenswet is “now very well. He’s doing really well. He’s going to fly in the sky.”
Overall, Har’el knows Episode 6 might split opinions. “It’s going to divide people,” she says. “For me, it’s the episode that wasn’t in the book but made this show possible for me. That’s where my heart is.”
