– Cillian Murphy was almost cast in the role of J. Robert Oppenheimer in the original Manhattan TV series
– The part eventually went to actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach
– Showrunner Sam Shaw was kept awake with thoughts of what might have been had Murphy taken the role
Cillian Murphy, best known for his portrayal of Thomas Shelby in the hit series “Peaky Blinders,” almost secured a different starring role prior to becoming an iconic gangster. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, series creator Sam Shaw revealed that he had originally considered Murphy for the role of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who led the team that developed the first atomic bomb in early episodes of the Manhattan TV series.
However, the role eventually went to actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Shaw had approached Murphy in Ireland, and while the idea of him playing the part had excited Shaw, it ultimately did not come to fruition. He admitted that the thought of what might have been had Murphy accepted the role was something that would keep him up at night. Nonetheless, he praised the performance of Moss-Bachrach, who eventually filled the role that resulted in a memorable portrayal of the physicist.
If Cillian Murphy had taken on the role of Oppenheimer, the trajectory of his career might have been quite different. Known for his versatile acting skills, the addition of a character like Oppenheimer would’ve further diversified his resume. However, as a driven and resourceful actor, Murphy has continued to find success in projects such as “Peaky Blinders,” “Dunkirk,” and now as the lead in the upcoming Oppenheimer film directed by Christopher Nolan.
