Cancellation Anxiety: 21 Broadcast Shows Still on the Bubble

21 Broadcast Shows Remain in Limbo as Networks Weigh Renewal Decisions

The major broadcast networks have yet to determine the fate of 21 series as the traditional May upfront presentations approach, leaving fans and industry insiders speculating about which shows will return for the 2024-25 television season.

NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and The CW have already made renewal decisions on numerous programs, but a significant number remain “on the bubble” — industry terminology for shows whose futures hang in the balance.

Among the high-profile series still awaiting word is The Cleaning Lady, which has developed a devoted following during its run on Fox. The crime drama starring Élodie Yung has maintained steady ratings in its third season, though not spectacular enough to guarantee an automatic renewal.

ABC‘s medical drama The Good Doctor starring Freddie Highmore faces a different scenario — the show is concluding its seventh season with a series finale already announced for May 21. The network confirmed earlier this year that the the current season would be its last.

Several freshman series remain in contention, including NBC‘s Found starring Shanola Hampton (formerly of Shameless). The missing persons procedural has performed respectably in its time slot but faces intense competition for renewal.

CBS has yet to decide on veteran procedural S.W.A.T., which survived a previous cancellation last year after significant fan outcry. The Shemar Moore-led action drama continues to deliver consistent viewership, particularly in delayed viewing metrics.

For The CW, which has undergone significant programming strategy changes under new ownership, decisions remain pending on several shows including Superman & Lois — one of the network’s last remaining DC Comics properties.

Network executives weigh multiple factors when determining renewals, including:

  • Linear ratings performance
  • Streaming viewership
  • Production costs
  • International distribution potential
  • Studio ownership structure

Industry analysts expect most renewal decisions to be finalized before the mid-May upfront presentations, where networks unveil their fall schedules to advertisers. However, some shows may remain in limbo even after these events as networks negotiate with production studios over financial terms.

The broadcast landscape continues to evolve amid intense competition from streaming platforms, making traditional renewal metrics increasingly complex for network decision-makers.
