– The Flash director Andy Muschietti confirms Batgirl movie will continue without J.K Simmons as Commissioner James Gordon
– Muschietti announces different name and origin for the new Batgirl character
– Simmons may return to other DCEU movies as Commissioner Gordon
The Flash director, Andy Muschietti, has confirmed that the Batgirl movie will proceed as planned, but with a new character replacing J.K. Simmons’ Commissioner James Gordon. Speaking to TVLine, Muschietti stated that despite rumors of cancellation, the movie is still in the works. However, he added that Simmons’ character will not be featured in Batgirl, but might return for other projects in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
Muschietti said, “That’s a different version and a different person,” referring to the upcoming portrayal of Batgirl. He confirmed that there would be a new name and origin story introduced for the character. This is contrary to popular belief that the Batgirl movie will focus on Barbara Gordon, James Gordon’s daughter, taking on the mantle of Batgirl.
Simmons played Commissioner James Gordon in 2017’s Justice League, and his portrayal was generally well-received by fans. He is expected to reprise it in Zack Snyder’s Justice League and other DCEU projects.
The Batgirl movie, directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, is reportedly in development at Warner Bros. and DC Films. Christina Hodson, who penned Birds of Prey and Bumblebee, is attached to write the script.
