Fox is reportedly in talks to bring American Dad! back to its original network as the animated comedy’s run on TBS comes to an end.
The Seth MacFarlane-created series, which originally aired on Fox from 2005 to 2014 before moving to TBS, may be returning to its first home after a decade-long absence.
Sources familiar with the negotiations indicate Fox is interested in adding the long-running animated series back to its programming lineup. The potential move comes as American Dad! concludes its run on the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned cable network.
American Dad! has maintained a loyal audience throughout its cable run, making it an attractive acquisition for Fox as the network looks to strengthen its animation offerings.
The series follows Stan Smith (voiced by MacFarlane), a conservative CIA agent, and his unconventional family, including wife Francine (Wendy Schaal), daughter Hayley (Rachael MacFarlane), son Steve (Scott Grimes), and their talking goldfish Klaus (Dee Bradley Baker). The household also includes Roger (MacFarlane), an alien who escaped from Area 51.
MacFarlane created the series alongside Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman, who have served as executive producers throughout its run.
During its original Fox tenure, American Dad! was part of the network’s “Animation Domination” programming block alongside The Simpsons, Family Guy, and other animated comedies.
The potential network switch comes as Fox continues to invest in adult animation, with current offerings including The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers, and newer additions like The Great North.
Representatives from Fox and Warner Bros. Television have not yet commented on the potential acquisition.
