Disney+ canceled the Star Wars spinoff The Acolyte after just one season, and it wasn’t a shock to its star.
On Wednesday, Amandla Stenberg, who played twin sisters Osha and Mae, shared her thoughts on Instagram Stories. She revealed that the show’s cancellation didn’t surprise her due to the intense backlash: “There has been a rampage of vitriol that we have faced since the show was even announced… a rampage of, I would say, hyper-conservative bigotry and vitriol, prejudice, hatred and hateful language towards us.”
Amandla also expressed how much it meant to be part of the Star Wars universe. She thanked the fans who supported them and said their love made her job worthwhile.
The Acolyte premiered in June on Disney+, with an eight-episode season wrapping up in July. Critics praised it for its fresh take on the Star Wars universe. However, some fans rejected it, calling it “woke” because a Black LGBTQ actor was cast as the lead. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics gave it a 78% score, but users only rated it at 18%.
Fans can be really intense sometimes.
After Disney+ announced the cancellation earlier this month, Lee Jung-jae, who played Jedi Master Sol, expressed his hope for future changes: “I really hope we could get to see further stories [in a] second season.”
