2026 Renewal Cancellation Scorecard: Shows Returning Cancelled and On Bubble

Networks and streaming platforms have started making early decisions on their programming slates for the 2026-2027 television season, with several shows already securing renewals while others face cancellation.

The annual renewal and cancellation cycle has begun earlier than usual this year, with platforms making strategic programming decisions months ahead of the traditional May upfronts.

Several fan-favorite series have already secured their futures. HBO announced Thursday that The Last of Us will return for a third season despite its second installment still being in production. Meanwhile, Netflix has granted early renewals to both Squid Game and Wednesday for their third seasons.

Not all shows have been so fortunate. ABC has officially pulled the plug on long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy after what will be its 23rd season, ending the Shonda Rhimes-created phenomenon that has dominated television for over two decades.

“Making this decision wasn’t easy, but we feel the story has reached its natural conclusion,” said Rhimes in a statement. “We’re grateful to the fans who have stayed with us through this incredible journey.”

Several series remain firmly on the bubble. NBC‘s Law & Order: Organized Crime continues to face uncertainty despite solid streaming numbers, while CBS has yet to make decisions on several of its freshman dramas.

Apple TV+ has renewed critical darling Severance for a third season ahead of its second season premiere, signaling strong confidence in the Ben Stiller-produced psychological thriller starring Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation).

Industry insiders note that streaming metrics now play a significant role in renewal decisions, even for broadcast networks, with delayed viewing sometimes saving shows that underperform in live ratings.

Prime Video has committed to a third and final season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, providing producers the opportunity to conclude the epic fantasy narrative properly.

Shows still awaiting official word include Fox‘s 9-1-1: Lone Star, The CW‘s complete slate following its ownership change, and several Paramount+ originals.

This renewal cycle has been marked by more early decisions than in previous years, reflecting the industry’s adaptation to changing viewing habits and production timelines in the post-pandemic landscape.
