Trainwreck (2015) with Amy Schumer

Directed by US comedian Judd Apatow (behind a run of fabulous comedy classics, including The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) and Knocked Up (2007), this hilarious film is about a curvaceous party girl, Amy (Amy Schumer). A hard-drinking, promiscuous 20-something, Amy is a features writer for a men’s magazine, tolerating a relationship with her gym-addicted boyfriend, Steven (played by burly former professional wrestler John Cena). Things take a dramatic twist when she is tasked to produce an article about Aaron (Bill Hader), a sports doctor. Will their tentative relationship lead to something more mature and meaningful? With sparkling dialogue and endearing characters, viewers will soon be drawn into this comedy about a mismatched couple is an excellent example of a larger woman boldly taking center stage.

Isn’t It Romantic (2019) with Rebel Wilson

Rebel Wilson, a proudly plus-sized performer from Australia, stars as Natalie, an architect hailing from Down Under who now lives amongst the hustle and bustle of New York. Although she distrusts romantic comedies, when she is knocked unconscious during a street mugging, she becomes trapped in a fantastical dimension where everything unfolds like some stereotypical rom-com. In this weird parallel world, characters behave differently, forcing her to confront her true feelings. This film may itself be a romcom, but with Chris Hemsworth and Adam DeVine as her co-stars, the intriguing premise means that you can never second-guess what is going to happen next.

Booksmart (2019) with Beanie Feldstein

Directed by Olivia Wilde (an actress famous for her role in the acclaimed medical drama House), this unconventional film is about two high school graduates, Molly (Beanie Feldstein) and Amy (Kaitlyn Dever), who decide to shake things up a little on graduation day. Unpopular with their fellow students, they decide to reinvent themselves as party girls, leading to all sorts of adventures (and misadventures) as the plot moves through various hilarious and thought-provoking scenes.

Just Wright (2010) with Queen Latifah

Leslie (Queen Latifah) is a physical therapist, and one of her clients is a former basketball star, Scott McKnight (played by US rapper/ actor Common). Her friends are forever cautioning her that the men she gets involved with only ever see her through platonic eyes, but after bumping into McKnight, a spark is ignited. An unfortunate twist is that Leslie’s friend, Morgan (Paula Patton), whose ambitions extend no further than becoming a basketball trophy wife, has also set her sights on the charming and athletic McKnight.

Life of the Party (2018) with Melissa McCarthy

McCarthy, a plus-sized star in numerous fantastic comedies, plays Deanna, a divorcee who decides to return to college to complete the degree she was forced to give up 22 years previously. Naturally, the appearance of this larger-than-life personality has major repercussions as she has to jump through many hoops to achieve her ambitions, not least putting on a Christina Aguilera concert to try and accumulate some college funds. This is a heart-warming feature that will draw you into its charm.

Whenever you decide to sit down and chill in front of the box, you’ll be hoping to be captivated. A lot of movies are guaranteed to have you on the edge of your seat, and many of these feature body-positive characters and storylines. The good news is that this industry has never been healthier, with exhilarating new titles being released regularly. So, if you’re looking for ideas for a good night’s entertainment, look no further than your couch and the TV remote control.
